Maple Old Fashioned
Iknow it’s summer and that means fun and fruity cocktails, but sometimes I just want to sit and sip on something comforting. The slow, sweet warmth of an Old Fashioned might remind you more of cozy winer nights in front of the fire, however it’s also great on a cooler summer night watching the sunset. Of course I had to put my own spin on it and this Maple Old Fashioned is a new twist on a classic drink.
An Old Fashioned is a really simple drink to make. Just a few ingredients muddled together and served over ice. As you can tell by now I love mixology, and always have the basics in my liquor cabinet. So this was really simple to make.
A New Twist on an Old Fashioned
Normally an Old Fashioned is made with bitters, a sugar cube, a nice whiskey and served on ice in a rocks glass. You can garnish it with a slip of orange peel or a cocktail cherry… and if you can’t decide then use both!
However I wanted to give my version a distinct Canadian twist by using soft maple sugar instead of white sugar. It has more flavour than white sugar, and is oh-so-slightly better for you.
Maple sugar is easy to find at farmers markets and local grocers here in Canada. If you’re not lucky enough to live in the Great White North then just ask around at your local smaller grocers and markets.
It Takes Just Minutes To Make
As for putting it all together it couldn’t be easier. The biggest temptation will be resisting the urge to eat that soft maple sugar before you get the chance to make the drink!
Take one cute little maple leaf shaped cube of maple sugar and put it in the bottom of your glass. Shake a couple dashes of bitters on top, maybe a drop or two of water and muddle in the bottom.
Next grab your favourite Whiskey and pour in 1.5 oz, about a shot and a half. To keep the Canadian pride going I used Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve. It’s a bold, full bodied whiskey with a hint of warm spice.
